Artist Statement: Carol Teal
I came to clay after working in a variety of other visual arts/crafts mediums (paint, wood, marquetry). I love the malleability of clay and the ability to work in three dimensions to sculpt, carve, throw and have such an unlimited palate of finishes available. From the graceful curves of an exquisitely shaped vase to the farthest reaches of our imagination for sculptures, clay holds possibility for a vast range of creative self-expression that continues to excite and compel me.
Then there’s the fire… I love the metaphor of clay… forming, passing through the fire, burning off the unnecessary and solidifying that which survives… and always some surprises from the kiln to challenge our need for control and keep us humble. Life…
